In this type of installation, the gate is constantly pulling to the side of the pin and the square shoulder of this pin prevents it from rotating in the hole which would cause your gate to sag.

Installation Specs
The 8317 square shouldered pins are used to prevent your pin from rotating within the post in a “behind the post” type installation. Rotation of the pin with hole in this type of installation usually causes the gate to sag.
Drill a 3/4” hole right through the post. Insert the threaded portion of the pin through hole until it protrudes through the opposite side. Thread on the nut and washer and then tighten and draw the square shoulder into the post to your desired depth.
